Description

Spices and seasonings from India and all over the world enhance dishes and make them delicious! Flavor enhancers like spices, spice powders, seasonings and sauces, when used in a complementing way can add delicious, lip-smacking flavor to any dish that all age groups can enjoy!

Today I will showcase the Spices and Seasonings from India (the capital of Spice Trade for centuries).

INDIAN SPICE BOX:

I) Dry Spice Powders & Spice Blends:

  • Roasted Coriander (cilantro seeds) powder

  • Roasted Cumin powder

  • Kala Namak (Black Salt – actually pink in color)

  • Turmeric Powder

  • Amchur Powder (Dry Green Mango powder) – Sour

  • Red Chili powder (different types) – Spicy

  • Garam Masala (a spice blend) – Mildly Spicy

  • Curry Powder (a spice blend) – Mildly Spicy

II) Dry Whole Spices:

  • ✓ Whole green cardamom
  • ✓ Whole black cardamom
  • ✓ Bay leaves
  • ✓ Cloves
  • ✓ Star anise
  • ✓ Cinnamon sticks
  • ✓ Fennel
  • ✓ Fenugreek seeds
  • ✓ Whole Coriander (cilantro) seeds
  • ✓ Whole Cumin Seeds
  • ✓ Whole Black Pepper

III) Fresh Ingredients:

  • Fresh Ginger, finely chopped

  • Fresh green chilies, chopped

  • Fresh garlic, chopped

  • Fresh onions, chopped

  • Fresh tomatoes, chopped

  1. You can use any or all of these spices in any combination depending on the flavors and spices you like the most. For example, I use a tad more cumin powder than others since I like the flavor of roasted cumin the best.
  2. I also like the flavor of ginger and so we use ginger in any and all savory dishes but I also use fresh ginger in a Ginger Molasses Cake that I make and is our family favorite.
  3. Flavor enhancers – tomatoes, onion and garlic are used in many curries and bean dishes in Indian cooking and so also a bit of cream.
  4. For cream, one can use a nut sauce (cashew) or for a reduced-fat version a white bean sauce or an oat sauce.
