Canan Orhun

Description

Ever since I found out about Gomasio it has become one of our favorite seasoning mixes. Gomasio is a Japanese word meaning “sesame salt”. The two main ingredients are sesame seeds and salt, but there are many versions. Its uses are endless, for example, I add it to soups, rice, pasta, sushi, over veggies and mix it in cashew cream to use as a dip and more… I prefer to make it fresh each time, however you can make a bigger batch and save it in a jar in the fridge.  Here is my favorite way to make it, feel free to adjust the ingredients to your liking!

  • ✓ 1 tablespoon unhulled sesame seeds
  • ✓ 1 tablespoon wakame (or other seaweed)
  • ✓ ¼ teaspoon turmeric
  • ✓ 4-5 black peppercorns
  • ✓ 1/8 teaspoon of coarse grain salt
  1. Toast the sesame seeds and wakame in a dry non-stick pan (I use a cast iron pan), until the sesame seeds get a bit of color, for a few minutes, avoid burning the seeds.
  2. While they are toasting put all the other ingredients in a mortar.
  3. Once the sesame seeds and seaweed are toasted add them to the mortar and gently mix the ingredients. You will catch a whiff of the turmeric heating up, which is lovely.
  4. Using the pestle gently grind the mix into your desired consistency.

Enjoy!
